of the locks began at the end of June 2011 on the Atlantic side and in early July of the same year on the Pacific side.<br \/>The locks were built with a projected useful life of 100 years. To make this possible, high compressive strength mixes were developed, with a maximum permeability of 1,000 Coulombs, a maximum water\/cementitious material ratio of 0.4 and control of the difference between internal and external temperatures.<br \/>This was due to the fact that the large volumes of concrete presented differences of up to 20\u00b0C. To avoid surface defects that would require future repairs, special attention was paid to areas in direct contact with seawater.<br \/>The new locks have three consecutive chambers that were designed to move ships from sea level to a large artificial lake.
